She rolled from side to side in a bid to get some sleep. She kept rotating her slender beautiful body wondering where her life was to start. Her eyes were open and her face could tell it all. She was unsettled. She could not find sleep though. The ceaseless sounds that emanated from the other houses next to her could not even make her have peace with herself. She was in sixes and sevens. When other couples were living life, when other children were being pampered by their parents, when other families were planning make over’s and good life strategy, Joy was in a dilemma. She was between a rock and a hard place. She was torn between two worlds. She had to choose between becoming the woman of the night and begging.

Many men who resided at the area knew her story. They would come to her door and beg her to open the door. This was a custom even for the married men. At around 8pm at night, one by one, they would whisper at her in short loud murmurs to open the door so they could ‘conjugate’ with her and make her survive this world.

‘Hey Joy? I know you are in there; could you please let me in? I promise I bright future after this.’

‘Hello, I heard you have nothing to live on. Open the door and you will be the one for me.’ Another after another came with a different quote. At one time of the night, Joy got out of her sleeping mat and walked to the door. She peeped through the hole that had been made for that work. Due to the city-night-light, she would be able to focus very well at who was on her doorstep .She could not imagine the kind of guy who was relentlessly saying about handling her. The guy was a complete definition of what looked like an evil man. He had sat outside her house for about three hrs. now awaiting the door to open. From what Joy knew, he was a married man with three children. He had only adorned a pendant and a baggy short with no upper clothing. The bare chested man was holding 3 pieces of barrier contraceptives in his right hand. Looking at the man for a second time, she had already noted that this man did not have good aims.  He wanted to bed her like the other women of the town. She walked behind and lay once again on the mat. This time around, she got ‘some’ sleep and she drifted gradually to slumber.

The banging of ‘sufurias’, the smell of tea, the tweeting of the morning birds and the ceaseless cry of babies had filled the entire area. Men and women had already started walking to their work places. In this part of the world, women would wake up very early and prepare tea, then go to get money for the evening meal. On the other side, men would have their ‘exodus’ very early in the morning to form a ‘kamkunji’ (group) of men where they would discuss the latest politics and football news. This was the heightened height of madness in this community.

The loose ‘ownerless’ cows and mangy dogs marauded the streets, some men constructed and mended their falling houses.  It is only in this part of the world, where you would meet a man stitching his falling roof with a large needle!

After she made her second turn while sleeping, she opened her eyes. It was a new day and not so welcoming to her. She was hungry and the borborygmus sounds of her bowels were evident. She looked around. There was nothing that she could bite nor drink. She stood up and walked to the door with frailty. She told herself that she had to borrow. She did not want the idea of joining Angel’s group. She had two doubts. She walked between the ramshackle stretched mud houses to the building of a man who was her uncle. He was not that well-up too. In fact, he was suffering even more than she was. He had 12 children and 3 wives who looked emaciated and frail. Joy wondered how he could sire all these children and lack food to feed them. Fortunately, Joy met his uncle splitting firewood. His wives had gone to work as house helps to bring food on the table.

‘Hey how are you uncle’ she started the conversation.

‘I’m fine and still pushing forward. How have you been?’ he asked

After getting ‘the know’ on each of them, Joy was invited inside the house for tea and some ‘maandazi’ (wheat flour buns). She felt so happy and satisfied even before she started taking the breakfast. She at very fast as they talked unending stories with his uncle. She was that kind of girl who had many stories to talk if she got that chance.

Meanwhile, all the time, her melanin-coated uncle was pretending not to be looking at her well-formed cleavage and protruding thighs that would be seen evident despite her opaque dressing. The 10 yr. old was well blessed. His eyes had internalized her and undressed her to bits. He had already imagined the worst. Joy did not seem perturbed since this was his uncle. Just as she placed the mug on the table, her uncle became uncontrollable. With the stress of a demon, he grabbed her by the neck and took her forceful to the inner rooms uncloaking her attires all the way, until he dropped her on the cold matrimonial bunk of his first wife. The mud houses could not let out any noise, not even a sharp wail. She tried to resist but this guy was strong and masculine. With the virility and agility of a vampire, he completely routed her, raped her continuously for almost half an hour before dropping her on the floor. He later made her bath forcefully and gave her new clothes. Before he chased her away, he informed her never to come to his place again and that she was a cursed child.

Before she got out, she wiped all her tears and looked back at his uncle again. She could not imagine what had just happened. With tired-looking, uncoordinated body movements and steps, she walked out of the house and walked slowly as she bled from the ‘insides’ to her home. She got inside the room and locked the door.  She sat at her usual mat and started crying continuously. Boluses of huge tears could just roll uncontrollably. She now knew that she was alone and nobody was ready to make things change on her side. She had trusted her uncle 100%. She hunched up and held her legs by her chest  on the cold mat shaking to bits. She was dead-scared and worried about her next move. The time was around 11am.

She had to go for plan B –the Angel’s group.
