The ‘Black Pigment’ In a Lady’s Skirt
Posted by Melting Ice Towers
After attaining a certain age in this tradition, Asha was scheduled to undergo the ‘cut’ or as the say Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). It was mandatory. Failure to go would pronounce you an outcast of the society and nobody would allow you to their vicinities. She took her girth, faced the bull by its horns, and underwent the painful procedure. Only a small opening was left for excretion of liquid matter and painful bleeding sutures that made her persevere through a painful month. She almost died of excessive blood loss. They say by circumcising ladies, they preserve them to be married off as virgins. Men in the community value chastity and the reason behind the Cut. Adding on to that, after FGM Asha was to be married off to a ‘potential husband’ who she had never seen. These things happened in a strike of lightening.
The elders converged to a meeting and discussed about this girl called Asha. She was young but she seemed grown.
Her secondary sexual characteristics had already matured and shown off at an early age. She looked ripe and the eye-candy to all the village men. The elders were served their favorite traditional brew and they talked and decided on the man to take over the girl. This was done in her absence. It was usually the custom. The lady was sold off to the highest bidder. The one taking her was to provide the correct amount of cows, goats and sheep required for the dowry custom. Asha did not even understand what being a woman is. She did not have the intellectual nor sexual maturity. She is like an object, which is prone to be used and misused by the ‘husband’.
Let us talk about Asha now after 5 yrs. down the line.

She was a lady in a ‘male sided’ family. This means that she could not be allowed to make any important nor unimportant decisions just because she was a woman. She was married off at a tender age of 9 yrs. to a polygamous village elder aged 56yrs old. There, she worked as a house help to the other wives. She washed dishes, fetched firewood, cooked food for even visitors she did not know, she just worked like a machine. Her most important and best job was to welcome the husband’s visitors though the ‘husband’ could scorn her anytime even in front of the visitors. What a life? The best thing such men know is lay in the sun with fellow men admiring the environment while discussing football and the latest politics. They expect to come home and eat from any of the wives the choose while they did not even leave anything behind when they left in the wee morning hours. What a shock?
Asha did not even know to say some words. She did not even go to school. She just knew the normal vernacular names of food she cooked. She was a worker in a working industry. Her clothes would shock a man from town or the urban areas. She had just a little ‘leso’ to cover her merely covered cleavage and a string to cover the front part of her genitals. The back was left bare from head to toe. Her body could display the cars of a sunburnt woman who cannot be mistaken due to overworking and hyperpigmentation of skin in sunburnt areas. The ‘husband’ would arrive any time to have what is called ‘the siring of children’ at any time and could not even let her meditate before the ordeal. The pride of men in the time was to sire as many children as possible. A man who owned 10 women with 6 children in each of the wives was considered great. Children were considered as cheap labor such that the family will never call upon people to make up a fence or do some payable /taxable services.

For each ‘siring of children’ episode, she would bleed a lot. She could not handle it. During FGM, Asha had been stitched completely and the pain increased always. Instead of the way, couples engage in marital episodes of siring in a happy way, Asha would just cry the entire time as she bled. The husband does not care after all. His main aim is to be satisfied and to sire as many children as possible. Most women living in abroad and in developed countries cannot imagine this life. Some women are really suffering with these old oppressive female traditions.
Asha became pregnant and she continued doing her duties as a wife. She did all the work and she was not an exception to any kind of work. When she reached her term, a group of women who call themselves experts of female delivery took her. These women have been performing deliveries since the beginning of time. Pregnant mothers have never even seen a hospital; they get ideas from these women. Asha lay on a piece of mat. They undressed her and started massaging the lower abdominal portion of her system in a bid to get the baby out. The baby could not get out. The circumcision she underwent through her teenage had made it difficult for the baby to get out. These women do not know anything about caesarean section or control of post-partum or pre-partum hemorrhage. Asha started screaming as she wiggled and sprawl on all angles as a group of strong iron women held her strongly on the ground. She was bleeding profusely and they had not seen such condition before. They tried their best to stop the bleeding but nothing could be done. After about 20 minutes, the Asha we have been reading about was dead.
The husband was informed and opted to marry another young lady from the same village. He did not feel any worries. He had no achievable feelings. The community men and the so-called wise men of the community termed it as the ‘wrath of the gods’ on their community. Rather than admitting to the poor services during delivery and also the painful repercussions of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
The ego that such men have, the perception of being superior and domineering is a great obstacle for such female empowerment. How do you think such women could be help by external people? Is it through informing them what they know is right or is it by changing their perception and their view of things? The fact that they are so submissive to actions taken against them makes them be misused and severely beaten by their fellow ‘husbands’ which makes them timid and quiet. They had better follow everything said or directed rather than suffer blows and kicks. Remember Analgesics are so expensive nowadays! The era in which ‘women would answer when the man coughed’ as though they had been called is slowly and gradually ending in most countries. However, what about the countries that practices such things like FGM and neglecting women? How do we do about that? Does it need government Intervention?

The female generation has been the spotlight for occasional isolation and oppression. Despite the measures taken by the world to counter the problem, the problem remains engulfed deep in the minds of the perpetrators of the acts. Especially in Africa, there has been a lot of female exploitation in different aspects of the life of a female child. Ranging from female genital mutilation, forced marriages, misusing of ladies to do some neglected or duties considered as taboos.
Lastly, some people do not come into your life to love you. They come into your life to use you, manipulate everything in you. They do not see you as a friend. They see you as an opportunity. It will be so soon when you realize they had executed their professionally endorsed strategy and abandoned you in some very devastating state.
