It was during the December 2011 holiday. Kamau had gone to his grandmothers’ home in Meru, Kenya to have a visit before school opened. Kamau was aware of the area. When you are in debt, you must pay according to the agreed time. That was the rule that none in the area could lack to know. Bandits infested the area too. They sauntered the village searching for valuable items that they could easily get by employing force. In the area, houses were close together forming clusters such that Kamau would hear skirmishes and banging of ‘sufurias’ emanating from the neighboring house.
That evening at around 7pm, Kamau went to visit an old friend of him. He was a 55 yrs. old man. He was an introvert. He had married one wife and they were blessed with two kids. When he got inside the thatched house, the old man’s children warmly welcomed Kamau and served him with tea. The old man seemed to be in a sea of problems. They talked for a while as the old man explained what he was facing.
He explained to Kamau that some people were after his life because he was not able to pay their debt. He had huge debts that he was not able to pay due to his low lifestyle and his poor economic purchasing power. This man did not share his problems to his wife. This was because he was in the company of the village bandits that had been terrorizing the area every night. He had taken a loan from the bandits and used it haphazardly. With time, the money was over!
This gang came to the man the previous night and offered him a period of six days to refund the money back. They told him that it would be very painful if he refused to repay the debt according to the specified period. It was now two days left and he did not have any money. Kamau too could not help it. The man did not want it to be publicized. He wanted a secret way to get the money. What could he do?
‘What shall you do? These guys are going to kill you!’ Kamau told him
‘They will spare me. I have been their best in offering the skills’ he said, as he seemed not to worry. He believed strongly that the gang would spare him.
‘I must find a way to assist you. In return, you should promise me to avoid this gang’ Kamau told the man.
‘Deal?’ he stretched his hand to greet the man.
The man rejected and kept on saying he will never disown what that has given him livelihood since he was a young boy.
Kamau got up and left the house. He was frustrated by the man’s decision.
No sooner had 30 minutes passed than the man received a call. The gang told him that they were headed towards his place to receive their debt. After the call, he kept his phone on top of the table and gazed at the ceiling. He got up and walked towards his wife. He whispered something to her. Later, he gathered his children and hid them in a certain room. He later told his wife to hide in the attic (ceiling) as fast as she could. The wife climbed inside the attic and closed the lid that led to the area. He warned both the children and wife to wait in their hiding place no matter what would happen until everything was okay. Both the wife and the children did not understand the reason for been hidden. They just heed to their father’s words. He got back to the ‘living room’ and sat on a certain 3-legged stool.
‘Pap!’ the door flew open. Three people got inside the small room and slapped him. Another person gave him a blow that sent him down sprawling like a dying snake. He received punches and kicks while on the ground as he cried for help. They continued beaten him as he bled profusely from his mouth. They did not give him a chance to express himself. He had never received such a beaten before. He also remembered all the plundering activities they have been perfecting; they have never beaten a victim to search an extent.
They then threw him on the sofa. One of the men spread his legs and removed a pair of pincers. He inserted the pincers claws right between his legs and shouted, ‘do you have our money?’
His mouth and nose were full of blood. His eyes were swollen. He was not able to speak. When he tried to say something, he coughed blood. He had been overcome by the injuries he had received. As he was reluctant to speak, one of them who seemed to be their leader fired a bullet on his ankle stripping it into two. He had demolished the small bones that made the ankle joint. The man screamed in a loud voice as they continued slapping him. They had completely dislocated his lower limb from the feet.
Her wife who was in the ceiling could not hold it. He felt bad hiding whilst his husband was been killed. The thought that he had been shot made her think he was in his last chances of survival. She thought that by screaming, neighbours would come to her rescue and so, she let out a sharp yip from the ceiling. The three men gazed at each other and used gestures to communicate. One of them shot directly at the attic where the scream was emanating from shooting the wife directly at her innocent heart. The second shot got her forehead splashing all the contents of her frontal bone of the skull. She slid boneless and fell on the ceiling. Her weight made the ceiling sink down dropping from the top to the floor of the house just in front of her husband. Her eyes gazed directly at her husband as she died slowly. The man watched his wife die in horror as her blood formed a pool around her dead body.
‘That’s the price you pay for having not paid our debt,’ one of the men said.
‘We will get back to you on Saturday to see whether you have met our demands,’ they said as the got out.
As they were steps away from the main door, they saw a man coming to answer the old man’s scream. They shot him directly at the forehead killing him instantly.
In that single night, two people died innocently while one was crippled for life just because of his an unpaid debt.
